Hard Wire OBDII interface to car

Hi

I am planning to make an interface to be able to check
for fault codes on my 1997 Golf VR6.

Having looked around at many designs, and the apparent
problems of getting an OBD II socket, I am considering
Hard wiring the interface to the car, leaving the cars
OBD II socket working and intact, but adding an
additional connection point just for my own
connection.

Using a panel mount 9 pin d connector, I will be able
to connect direct to my lap top.

Has any one else done this?

Does anyone see any problems with this?

Jim
