Hi Saeed
when we speak from protocol , they are only the Layer 1 and/or Layer 2
protocol. But the other layer3-7 are car-manufacturer specific. for exemple
KW71 and KW1281 are the same on the physical level but they are already
different on transport layer. You can etablish comm. without problem with
precised keywords but you must know the application layer that you can do
somethink reasonable. j1979 brings some standart on session layer and
ISO15031-5 is finally a real ( emission related ) APPLICATİON Layer that you
can find all info what you need on all EOBD cars. when we look at KWP2000.
Renault , citroen , peugeot , fiat , mercedes use this protocol ( same
physical layer ) but all have different application layer. you can use the
commands read value by local ident but if you read the location e.g A0
every car gives another value out.

Thanks sander,
That was a great .pdf. So if I'm right this protocole should work for the
almost all ISO-9141 cars.
(Does anybody know if I can find this kind of information in HS 3000 book
from SAE?)
And a very amature question.... Bulent said that the difference is just
between keywords that specifies the protocol. But what is the difference
between different protocols? Are they more or less the same? and If they are
the same (BUT just the keywords) why are there different KWxxx out there?
Thanks for any help and answering my newbee questions.

Hi
the only difference between KW71 and KW1281 is keywords
The keyword tells which protocol is used. The keyword is read as 8 bit no
parity, but is actually send as 7 bit odd parity. The two seven bit numbers
( 8a ---> 0a and 8f ---> 0f 80h ---> 0 ) will give a 14 bit number as
follows:
(KW2 X 128) + KW1 = protocol number.
KW71 keywords are ---> C7h and 80h ( with parity )----> 47h and 0 ( w/o
parity )
(0x00 X 128) + 0x47 = 1281 (KWP 71)
(0x0a X 128) + 0x01 = 1281 (KWP 1281)
(0x09 X 128) + 0x77 = 1271 (KWP 1271)
(0x0f X 128) + 0x50 = 2000 (KWP 2000)

As far as I know, a lot of the commands for kwp1281 are the same as
for kwp71 (I (also) don't know what exactly kwp71 is). There are a
few specific ones. Of course the interpretation of the data can be
different too, for example with the data replied on the faultcode
diagnose.
