BMW VIN

How to read correctly the VIN of a BMW car?

The command seems to be B8 12 F1 06 23 0F F9 00 06 2E A0 (or B8 13
F7 02 21 81 FE for the new Mini), but could someone explain how
to "decode" the answer?
