'Master' key questions

I have some questions that have been puzzling me for sometime and
though perhaps someone could shed some light ;)

They refer to the 'Master' or 'Red' keys that many manufacturers
supply with their cars. I'm especially interested in Alfa/Fiat/Lancia
systems.

1)What frequency do the transponders works at?

2)What makes a master key transponder so special that it can not be
cloned?

3)Is the manual over-ride key code that you get with a master key
stored in the key open or encrypted or what? I'm referring to the
code that you often enter by pressing the accelarator pedal if you
have a fault with the transponder system.
