Definitely, yes.
Mine is a fist-sized cylinder with a pipe in the middle, can just see the pair
of wires in the pipe. The easy way to clean mine is to undo the screws on the
back of the sensor unit, withdraw the piece that goes into the tube and the
wires are then vulnerable and exposed.
They're not particularly fragile but as breaking one means a whole new unit I
try not to touch them and instead, a can of carb/injector cleaner (the sort
that leaves no residue, but I suspect that is all types) is used to squirt onto
the wires so they end up shiny and bright metal.
Then put the sensor back in and screw up. Takes about 30 seconds and I do mine
once or twice a year as it seems to be getting dirty again by then. It's also
possible to squirt the cleaner into the tube having removed the whole thing
from the ducting, but this is more bother.
AFAIK garages don't bother cleaning them and instead, wait till it is reading
really inaccurately and get you to buy a new one, since they get money on the
parts as well as the labour to change it.
They will go wrong, in about five years, depending on conditions. Pollen, dust,
etc, it all is sucked over the wires and because they are hot, this stuff
sticks onto the wire, but because they're not very hot, is not burned off. So
month after month, the wires get dirty, require more current to keep them warm,
tell the EMS there is much more air entering the engine so it pumps in far too
much fuel, and eventually the EMS declares a sensor fault as the figures go
outside the rationality check and the "check engine" light comes on.
But instead of 300 euros of parts and labour, a one euro can of carb cleaner
and a few squirts into the end of the tube and it all returns to normal again:

(engine, air temp, etc, all identical.)
