help with jeffs circuit

I have build Jeff's circuit & I am using windows 2000 proffessional on a
toshiba 8100 laptop with Uwe's VAG-COM software. I am using a straight
through serial 9 pin cable from the back of the laptop to the COMPUTER side
of the circuit i.e. pin 1 goes to pin1 and so on. I keep getting adapter
not found error's - is there a FAQ or trouble shooting guide ??

PS I have the circuit powered by 12 volts on the other side of the circuit.
