Maybe the DLL ACTUALLY uses the device ID and protocol ID to create the
value pointed to by pChannelID. Then the caller verifies the return by
checking the value pointed to by pChannelID?
If you want to send me sample code I can try to verify for you. Which
application are you looking at to make the API calls?

Yeah I'm doing that but the OEM software reports a protocol error
and closes.
What are the valid channel IDs? Is there a range?
