jim,
I too have a subaru (98 Legacy Outback) and have been thinking about
connecting an old laptop to the OBD-II port.

Can you tell me more about your setup ?
What parts did you need ? (cables, adapter ,etc...)
Did you buy your software or write your own ?

any info or pointers would be great.
