Any kind of software assistance would be great. That's what we really
need at this point. I'd vastly prefer C myself, but Java and C++ are
both viable alternatives. The reason I prefer C is that it's portable
to everything, including small microcontrollers. Java would provide
fantastic portability at the expense of not running on cheap hardware.
Ideally, any software written would consist of an ultra-portable OBD2
library, and separate high-level code specific to whatever machine
and environment it was running on. Several of you want to run DOS,
others Windows, and others like myself prefer Linux. A lightweight C
library could make everyone happy. Especially if it could be put on a
microcontroller and used for such things as turbo boost gauges. :)

I wish I had more information. I haven't had /any/ time to spend on
the protocol. It sounds like others are willing to help. Organize, and
divide the task up! This is something the free software community really
needs. You'll be famous! :-)
