For what it's worth, I have never doen this.

I haven't really been following this thread, but anyway... If I remember
correctly, the RTS pin on the adapter should be tied to RTS on COM2 of
your computer. Tie the rest of the adapter to COM1. The problem is that
you need RTS to be LOW during the test, but every program out there will
put it HIGH! Assuming COM2 is not in use, RTS will be low, and you can
use the signal from that port. I know it's complicated, sorry...
