free Software?

Hi!

I'm reading this mailinglist now for quite a while but for some questions I
found no clear answer.

1) Is there any free (free for personal/privat use) software to read the
error-log and the current engine data (rpm, speed, etc.) from a VW and
Skoda? Where can I find it and is it possible to write the results continous
into a file?

2) Can I buy an interface to these cars for less than about 50$ or do I have
to build it myself? Where can I get the partlist and the design?
